Stuck for what to get your office Secret Santa recipient? Looking for a cheap but cool gifts for folks that are hard to buy for? And what about that person that you kind of know but not really but need to get a present for? We’ve got the weekend craft project for you!
It’s… A PERSONALISED COFFEE MUG!
The good news is with this project, there’s a fair chance you won’t have to leave the house to get supplies. You will need:
- A white coffee mug (doesn’t have to be, but it does look best with a light background)
- A permanent marker
- An oven
- A baking tray
Once you’ve assembled these items, time to put your Tonia Todman hat on!
Step one is easy – preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Probably a good idea to remove the middle shelf too.
Now comes the hardest part: deciding what to put on it. The best advice we can give is think of your recipient then Google like mad. Do they love coffee? Tea? Enjoy a tipple? Have a hobby?
We ended up searching “quote coffee mugs” and getting lost for a while in the clever ones out there. You could go with a witticism, a well-known phrase, a personal in-joke or just a drawing – whatever takes your fancy.
Once you’ve decided, rope in the person in your household with the best handwriting, or invite a friend over who can do pretty cursive.
Tip from a pro: outline the mug dimensions on a piece of paper then draft up your quote to fit the area. Trust us, you don’t want to run out of room when writing on the real thing.
When you’re happy, consider doing another one while you’re at it. We ended up doing three! Then put the mug (or let’s be honest, mugs plural) on a baking tray and bake for 45 minutes.
AND THAT’S IT. Obviously let your crafty creation cool down prior to touching it, but now you have an awesome thing you made yourself.
Trust us, once you’ve done one you’ll want to do more, this time for yourself. We recommend a trip to the op shop to keep your white mug expenses low.
Mr C LOVED doing this project because he got to make a big coffee mug for his friend and write swear-words on it. He thinks it’s hilarious – but that one is obviously not suitable for blog photography purposes…
